Robbie Fulks and The Last Anthony Bourdain in Chicago Story You Need To Read

The Hideout

In our coverage of The Great Bourdain-Budacki's Fight of '12, we noted the fact that Budacki's promotion of the shooting (which earned Bourdain's wrath) was not that different from the show itself typically packing the house, as they had done with people we mostly know at Burt's Pizza a few years ago. This earned a condescending denial from Tony himself: "@GrubStreetCHI small factual matter: we did not pack Burt's with extras. When you assume you...". But now comes a wry firsthand account of how the show ensures a good crowd in the background— without promoting Bourdain's name and attracting foodie groupies alone. It's from alt-country great Robbie Fulks at his blog, and it starts with a call asking him to help make sure there's a big crowd at the Hideout on a Monday night— but he can't even tell his fellow band members why.

As Fulks tells the story:

The famed chef Anthony Bordeaux was coming to next Monday night's show, to tape a little of the performance for his TV show, hang out at the bar, and talk to me and other denizens of the Hideout. A little probing revealed that the worthy was in fact Anthony Bourdain, but I really like "Bordeaux" better in every way: "Hey there, Bordeaux, welcome to fuckin' Chicago!" Anyway, I was given a delicate mission, to promote the show, hard, in order to fill the room -- but the reason was to be kept strictly secret. Even the band must not know. If Anothony Bordeaux walked into a place and a flock of Anthony Bordeaux fans were waiting there to hound and to gurm him, the flavor of the show would be spoilt.

Fulks and his band get a bunch of their friends out, pack the bar, push back the starting time of their set to accommodate the fact that Bourdain and crew will be late... but in the end they're so late that the show ends and the crowd leaves before Bourdain ever gets there:

So anyone that came for some TV excitement and hung around for an hour afterward (there were a good number) got to see what the front room of the Hideout looks like with some musicians at one end of the bar, Anthony Bordeaux at the other end, and a small phalanx of cameramen and producers scurrying around in between us and behind the counter... But I think it's too bad they missed the show. As one observer generously noted, the tableau of traveling to a town, walking into a tiny bar, and seeing the kind of music being made last night would have been pretty awesome and out-of-the-ordinary.

Don't miss some killer deadpan snark in the comments, either. [robbiefulks.com]

Collision course

Pete Beuscher of North Center is used to seeing others running alongside him on the Lakefront Trail, but on one recent Sunday, as he ran north near Belmont Avenue, Beuscher spotted a trail user running on gasoline.

"I heard some people shouting behind me. I turned around and saw a taxicab driving down the middle of the Lakefront Trail!" Beuscher, 44, said. After some hubbub, the cab found its way to Belmont Avenue and exited safely, Beuscher said.

While the pedestrian-cab conflict is rare, other clashes on the trail are not. The Active Transportation Alliance, a cycling, walking and transit riding advocacy group, estimates 70,000 people use the Lakefront Trail-which spans 18.5 miles from Edgewater to South Shore-each weekend day in the summer. About 70 percent of those users are pedestrians, the alliance determined.

The Active Transportation Alliance has identified five hotspots for conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians on the Lakefront Trail based on user feedback and a study it conducted with the Chicago Park District that was released last year.

Some of these areas suffer from structural problems, while others see too much foot traffic. Some sections have been targeted by the city for improvement.

One of the most congested areas of the trail, near Navy Pier, is scheduled to receive a full makeover as part of a $44.5 million project. Construction on the Navy Pier flyover, a bridge over the Chicago River that links up to the Lakefront Trail near Ohio Street, is slated to begin in the spring, Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman Pete Scales said.

The north side of the trail, from the Navy Pier area to Edgewater, sees "significantly" more users than the south side of the trail, according to the Alliance.

Justin Gudani of West Ridge said he was concerned about congestion on that section of the trail when he recently took his new black beach cruiser for its first spin on the trail from Foster Avenue to Navy Pier.

As it turns out, his fears were unfounded.

"I think there are some areas [of the trail] where it does get a little narrow," said Gudani, 23. "There are a lot of runners, a lot of bikers. ... It's just about letting each other know 'We're about to pass you.' "

Mary DeBacker of Hyde Park wasn't so lucky. DeBacker said she was in an accident five years ago on the trail near Montrose Avenue. She said she was trying to avoid a group of runners and ended up running into another cyclist. There were no injuries.

DeBacker said because of congestion, she used to avoid the 31st Street area but that section of the trail is much better now because of recent upgrades.

"It was terrible. I try to be really conscious of not hitting people when I'm bicycling, so I would slow down to walk speed just so I could get through 31st Street. There were a lot of pedestrians that were not paying attention," said DeBacker, 53. "After awhile you learn you stay on the right."

Communication is the key piece of advice that the Chicago Area Runners Association gives to the 2,000-plus runners in its marathon training program.

Megan Sullivan, CARA training program manager, said she's heard of a couple of incidents between runners and cyclists this year. At least one runner was sent to the hospital while he was training on his own, she said.

To prevent these conflicts, Sullivan said CARA starts its group runs in two waves and group leaders strongly enforce running two-wide as the groups make their way along the path south of Wilson Avenue.

"We try to pace them out so they're not all clogging up the path at once," Sullivan said. "We warn them about the trail being really busy. We know how dangerous it can be if you're crossing over that midline."

See What Really Happens On a Farm Dinner in Ottawa, Illinois

Farm dinner at LaPryor Farm, Ottawa, Ill.

You see things about farm dinners, and they sound appealing, but then you wonder, do I really want to spend a whole day with strangers doing this? Am I going to wind up being forced labor for my dinner at some farm, or worse yet, have to listen to locavores going on and on? Anthony Todd at Chicagoist answers all of these questions and more. He went on last weekend's farm dinner organized by City Provisions' Cleetus Friedman at La Pryor farms in Ottawa, Illinois, and comes back with a full report plus a couple of dozen pictures. Todd comes back with a better appreciation for how someone like Friedman is reconnecting the bonds that the industrial food system has cut:

"When people order a ham sandwich at the shop," explained Friedman, "and give us nasty reviews on Yelp saying I can't believe a sandwich cost $11, I want to introduce them to Mark and Kristin [the farmers]. I want to explain how we butchered the pig, made the mayo from scratch, bought the tomatoes from local farmers. When we run out of ham, we don't call a Sysco truck to bring more."

Check the whole story out, from beer on the bus to live music by the campfire at the end, here. The Local Beet includes many upcoming farm dinners on their calendar here.
