Our cousins to the north have slightly different tastes when it comes to kid-friendly restaurants. American palates preferred dough (doughnuts and pancakes), cheese (pizza), and burgers, while Canadians leaned heavily toward breakfast, which made up nearly 25% of our list of restaurants.
As the most casual and comfortable of the three meals, it's no surprise that Canadian parents feel the most comfortable where you can grab a short stack, perfect omelet, and Caesar in the same place. Some of the best breakfast can be enjoyed in Calgary at OBE Breakfast Co., which literally has a flock of their own free-range chickens that produce eggs for the restaurant. At the time of writing this post, they had cracked nearly 290K eggs! That's a lot of Eggs Bennies.
The key to a great kid-friendly restaurant isn't just booster seats, plain noodles, and French fries. Customer service is vital. "Kids love mac and cheese, denver melt sandwich, and strawberries and cream pancakes," says Emily Jane, co-owner of Jethro's Fine Grub in Vancouver. "Portions are big enough to share…and we have a team of baby-crazy servers, who've been known to hold your baby for you so you can eat!"
The well-behaved are welcome: I spoke to Shayne Perrin who, with his wife Jodi, owns and operates the popular and cozy Blue Star Diner in Calgary. "We're a family-owned restaurant in a community of a lot of families. We don't promote ourselves as a kid-friendly restaurant. It happens by default. We're Mom and Dad too so we try to be accommodating." The diner offers a variety of tacos and burgers, which are loved by parents and the kiddies.
