Turning lunch box drudgery into a pleasant picnic

When you think of lunch as an opportunity to pack a special meal, it can go from dull to delicious! I learned long ago that I would be happier if I brought the foods that I like to eat from home instead of hoping that the cafeteria or nearby food court would satisfy me.

Tribune Wins Two Awards At Association of Food Journalists Awards in D.C.

Congrats to the Chicago Tribune which won two awards at the Association of Food Journalists awards for 2012. It took third place for Best Newspaper Good Coverage (200,000+ circulation), after the San Francisco Chronicle and Boston Globe, and writer Renee Enna won second place in Best Newspaper Food Feature (200,000+ circulation) for this article from June 2011 on the difficulty of making angel food cake. Though the name suggests a wider range of food journalism, the organization seems to be primarily if not overwhelmingly newspaper-oriented, with categories almost all skewed toward traditional newspaper food coverage and not the evolving media landscape (the "multimedia" award was suspended this year, as was the magazine award), but at least within the community of daily newspaper writers, the winners were an impressive bunch including the likes of Katharine Shilcutt (Houston Press) and Brett Anderson (recently laid off from the New Orleans Times-Picayune).

What To Eat at The Carriage House When It Opens September 18. Plus: Win Invite Monday at The Bedford

Charleston native Mark Steuer, who was Mindy Segal's longtime executive chef at Hot Chocolate, got his start at Brett McKee's Brett's in James Island, South Carolina. At The Bedford, he's been a chef with a pretty good contemporary restaurant, waiting for a chance to break out with the restaurant in his heart that would return him to his roots. Fortunately, he has partners who were sympathetic to this idea, which is about to result in The Carriage House, Steuer's lowcountry Southern spot coming soon to Wicker Park. We think The Carriage House will raise the bar on local Southern-influenced food, with its focus on a particular region— the Carolinas— whose coastal seafood-oriented cuisine has been less represented here than that of parts like Mississippi which have had more traditional ties to Chicago. And we've got the opening menu for below, and an opening date— Tuesday, September 18. But before that, we've got a chance for you to preview the food next week at The Bedford, and win an invite for a friends and family preview. It's The Bedford's monthly Gong Show Karaoke night, next Monday; the judges will be Carriage House staff, and besides getting a chance to preview some Carriage House dishes, the highest scoring performers will win an invite to a preview dinner. There will also be Templeton Rye cocktails from The Bedford and Carriage House's mixologist, Michael Simon. The karaoke is a late night event, this Monday at 10:30 p.m.; in the meantime, check out the menu below.

CTA crowding plan blasted

More than 100 CTA riders attended a public hearing Tuesday on a proposal billed as enhancing bus and train service. But most people who testified denounced the crowding-reduction strategy as a trick by transit officials to slash much-needed bus routes.

Senior citizens, disabled riders, people who work late-night shifts and 9-to-5 commuters said the CTA should be focused on increasing service, not cutting it back.

They criticized the CTA for basing its service-restructuring proposals on an analysis conducted by transportation experts at Northwestern University rather than going to riders via neighborhood surveys.

"The process smells of a sham. One meeting in an overcrowded room," Uptown resident Michael Dannhauser complained to CTA President Forrest Claypool and the six CTA board members in attendance.

The CTA board is expected to vote on the changes at its Sept. 12 meeting. If approved, the changes would go into effect Dec. 16.

Dannhauser said the CTA could make progress toward easing overcrowded buses and reducing bus-bunching on routes if transit officials paid closer attention to the information on CTA Bus Tracker, then made adjustments to reposition buses.

As the Tribune has reported, Claypool's "de-crowding'' plan would eliminate or scale back up to 26 bus routes while expanding service on six rail lines and 48 overcrowded bus routes.

The goals of the CTA's $16 million combination of service cuts and enhancements are to reduce wait times for buses and trains and lessen crowding by 10 to 15 percent during rush periods, officials said.

More runs would be added on 48 bus routes, while 12 bus routes with low ridership would be discontinued and nine privately contracted CTA routes would be eliminated if subsidies were not increased. Changes also are scheduled for five more bus routes.

Roberta Wilson, an 85-year-old West Side resident, said she and other senior citizens often must walk blocks to reach a bus stop in the wake of service cuts in 2010 and then wait up to a half-hour for a bus to arrive.

"When they took the free rides from us seniors, that made me have to walk three blocks to get the bus," Wilson said. She urged the CTA board to work with the community.

Most of the public testimony centered on specific bus routes that longtime riders stand to lose under the plan.

Allan Mellis, representing the Wrightwood Neighbors Association, urged CTA officials to scrap plans to eliminate the No. 11 Lincoln bus.

"The major problem with eliminating the No. 11 is the irreversible harm that it will do to the economic redevelopment of Lincoln Avenue from Lincoln Square to Lincoln Park," Mellis said.

Mellis asked whether Tuesday night's testimony would have any impact on the CTA board's decision to approve, amend or reject Claypool's plan.

"Yes, it will," CTA Chairman Terry Peterson responded.

Riders for Better Transit, an advocacy group that generally supports CTA initiatives, urged the CTA to reconsider its latest plan.

"Some riders will lose access to transit or face more complicated trips," warned Brenna Conway, a representative of Riders for Better Transit, which is an arm of the Active Transportation Alliance.

Conway told the audience at CTA headquarters, 567 W. Lake St., that inadequate funding lies at the root of the CTA's problems.

CTA officials said riders affected by the canceled bus routes and reduced service will be able to use alternative service on CTA trains and Pace buses.

In addition, 17 rail trips would be added during weekday peak travel times, mostly on the Red, Blue and Brown lines, which are the CTA's busiest train routes.

CTA officials say they are responding to customer complaints that buses and trains are uncomfortably - and often unsafely - packed during rush periods. On overcrowded buses that typically carry 70 passengers, the new target will be 45 to 55 passengers per bus, CTA officials said.

More equipment and train runs would be added as well. Rail cars jammed with 90 or more riders when the CTA is operating at maximum capacity are targeted to see maximum loading decreased to 70 to 75 passengers, officials said.

CTA ridership has risen for 16 consecutive months, adding 22 million new riders since June 2011, according to the transit agency.

Details about the CTA's proposal to reduce crowding, including a list of the affected routes, is posted at transitchicago.com under the link "Crowding Reduction Plan."

Scott Harris' Salatino's Closes

Salatino's.

Scott Harris' domination of the Taylor Street area is reaching the point where he can even have his own cursed location, apparently. It's 626 S. Racine, and according to a poster on LTHForum, Salatino's, his attempt at old-school red gravy Italian in the space, has closed after not quite two years. Harris and the location first came together for Dean Zannella's Aldino's, which tried to bring innovatively modern Italian to the area. Harris seemed to decide surprisingly quickly that Aldino's wasn't working in this neighborhood known for red sauce Italian and chicken Vesuvio, and it closed in just four months. For its replacements Harris went entirely in the opposite direction, opening the pizza place Doughboys at the back of the building and planning to reopen a version of longtime neighborhood favorite Gennaro's with Mary Jo Gennaro in the kitchen. A family dispute kept him from naming it Gennaro's, and so he named it Salatino's for one of his longtime Mia Francesca chefs. Salatino's got decent reviews (hey, Pat Bruno liked it) but one has to admit that one had not heard anything about it, or even thought about it in a long time, so it's not entirely surprising that it has now apparently closed. UPDATE: Doughboys has closed as well, per Eater.

The Office Can Be Yours; Just Text It

Bartender Jason Cevallos in The Office.

Back when Grant Achatz was first talking about The Office as a super-secret hideaway spot for special guests, we put the question to a publicist-entrepreneur— do such exclusive places really exist? Are there things you can only get into as one of the beautiful people, and are there enough beautiful people here to support them, or is it just the sort of thing we think must exist because we see it in the movies? Her response was that the only thing like it that she could think of was Michael Jordan's private room (with separate entrance) at One Sixty Blue, though perhaps one or two of the pricier clubs had private rooms somewhat like it. A year after opening to the public, or rather not to them, The Office has successfully retained cachet as a plum for diners at Next or drinkers at The Aviary, but as Andrew Huff points out at Gapers' Block, "there wasn't much of a secret to getting into the Office at this point, and in my own experience, it's actually relatively easy to get an 'invitation,' provided you're not trying on Friday or Saturday night after 8pm or so." And now it's easier yet— as of last week you can try to get a reservation (for the earlier part of the evening, anyway), by simply texting 312-972-7641. If it's no longer an unattainable secret spot known only to celebs and best customers, it's still a cool, intimate space deep in the bowels of Next/The Aviary with a unique feel and an old school bar menu, worth a try and the price (which is steep). Get a taste of it in this Key Ingredient episode with former Aviary bartender Craig Schoettler. [Gapers Block]

Ragu - Worst TV Commercial of 2012

I know we are still barely halfway through the year, but I'm fairly certain nothing from the food advertising industry is going to come close to the horrid concept of Ragu's latest TV spot.  The ad successfully combines creepy and disjointed to deliver an experience that makes you go ewwwwww instead of mmmmmm.

The plotline is fairly simple: young kiddo in a nice house walks into his parent's bedroom without knocking.  Cue the quizzical, mystified, slightly grossed out image on the nice kiddos face.  Now inexplicably cut to the smiling, wholesome family serving some nice red Ragu at dinner that evening.  Dad's face clearly says, "this meal is the second best thing I've had today"; fortunately we only see Mom's back silhouetted in the foreground.

What on earth is Ragu's message?  "Our pasta sauce is so (fill in the blank) that it will wipe away the visuals of your parents fornicating."  It's so bad there's even a country style soundtrack: "Parents in bed, but its still 8:00, that's why they taught you you should always knock.  Ragu because growing up's tough . . . Ragu because he's been through enough."  I thought this was a SNLesque parody until I heard the wannabe Sam Elliot voice reading the tagline:  "A long day of childhood calls for America's favorite pasta sauce."

I'm definitely having steak, or soup, or casserole, or barbecue, or pizza tonight . . . anything to avoid popping open that pasta sauce jar stirring thoughts of my parents going at it.

Introducing the New Urbanspoon iPhone App

Imagine if you never had the chance to meet the love of your life. Perhaps she went to a different college, or his parents moved to a far-away town when he was young, or she wasn't feeling well that night and you didn't meet that night at that club. It's sad to think about, isn't it?

Well, that's how we at Urbanspoon feel about the millions of amazing meals our users never had the chance to eat, just because they never knew about the restaurant that would have been their favorite.

In the hopes of preventing those countless tiny tragedies, this morning we introduced the latest version of the Urbanspoon iPhone app, with a colorful new new design and fine-tuned features that make it even easier for you to discover great new places to eat, and maybe even your true dining love.

Urbanspoon Home ScreenOur new home screen shows you the best and buzziest spots in your city, with restaurants that critics and bloggers are raving about, across all cuisines and price ranges. We've highlighted the most popular cuisine types in your area, with a one-touch search that shows you the closest options near your location. There are also simple searches based on price ranges and what's open. It's all about expanding your horizons and making it fun to find great places to eat. (Don't worry, though, Mr. Change Makes Me Angry: all of our previous features are still available.)

Restaurant Map and ListThis latest version of the app also features more powerful, easier-to-navigate lists. All of our lists now include a map showing the location of each restaurant, for easier orientation. Willing to travel a little to find the most popular place in your town, or in a hurry and just need some good-enough, nearby options? You can sort any list by proximity, popularity, price, or alphabetical order. These options are available for all lists, including your wishlist and favorites.

Map ViewWe've also made it easier to fine-tune a location for your searches. Meeting up with a friend after work and want to find a great happy hour near her office? Planning for your upcoming vacation and curious what's near your hotel? Just select the neighborhood from the home screen to pull up the map, then move the map to set the location. From there, searching is simple.

In short, the new Urbanspoon iPhone app is about making connections, putting you in touch with great places to eat wherever you are. And when you do meet the love of your life, we'll help you find the perfect place for your first date.

Urbanspoon Travel Guide: Charlotte, the DNC edition

Dear Mr. President,

Forget the state of the economy, medical insurance issues, and the never ending tax-rate debate--politics just isn't my cup of macaroni and cheese, if you will.  As a fervent foodie based in Charlotte, the host city of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, I am writing you to advise you on the Queen City's culinary scene.  North Carolina is the birthplace of Cheerwine, Bojangles', and Texas Pete hot sauce and there's much more to our food than collard greens, pimento cheese, and sweet tea.

Pinky Burger-DNC

North Carolina barbecue—not to be confused with the chicken- and ketchup-based goop you find up north—is the heart of Charlotte's food scene.  Down here in Charlotte, where barbecue is a noun not a verb, it means pork cooked low and slow and finished with a tangy vinegar-based sauce.  There are several barbecue joints around town, but my favorite is Midwood Smokehouse.  Their custom built wood-burning smoker fills the restaurant with an intoxicating aroma—if it weren't for that smell, I reckon I'd still be a vegetarian.

Fried Pickles - DNC

In addition to barbecue, Charlotte is a big burger town. Top-ranked burger joints include Bad Daddy's Burger Bar and the Liberty, which is also well known for its Devils on Horseback and salted caramel budino.  If you're hit with a bout of indecisiveness, check out the Cowfish, which specializes in burgers, sushi, and burgushi.  Oh yes, burgushi.  I understand bipartisanship is important to you, Mr. President, so I highly recommend you also stop by both the Penguin and the Diamond.  These two spots have quite the storied rivalry, and both claim to offer the best fried pickles in the city.  Come to think of it, there are at least a dozen spots in town with the "best" fried pickles.  Jarrod of Dixie Dish swears the best can only be found at Pinky's Westside Grill.

Pizza_DNC

Do you like Italian food, Mr. President?  Mama Ricotta's is the top ranked Italian restaurant in the city, and their warm goat cheese and mascarpone dip is so good it's downright stupefying.  Homemade gnocchi is surprisingly popular in Charlotte, and you can find some of the finest at Portofino's and Dolce.  If you're searching for a good slice of pie, try out Hawthorne's New York Pizza, which has been voted the best pizza in Charlotte for several years running, or check out Intermezzo Pizzeria (and be sure to try their homemade ravioli while you're there).

Burger-DNC

Here I am drooling over thoughts of garlic knots and brisket Sloppy Joes, and not a word about breakfast.  My apologies, Mr. President! My favorite breakfast spot is Toast Café, not only for their toast (which is astonishingly fluffy) but also for the southwest chorizo scramble and the peanut-butter-banana-stuffed French toast.  Special for the 2012 election season, Toast Café is holding an official omelet poll.  You'll be happy to hear that the Obamelet is beating out the Romnelet by large margins.  Since I'm admittedly biased, I took the liberty of asking Curtis of the top-ranked Charlotte blog Urbanfoodlife for his breakfast recommendation.  He stands firmly behind the Bunny Rancheros at Zada Jane's Corner Cafe.

Tapas restaurants are sprouting up all over the city, and my favorite small plates are the sausage-stuffed poblano pepper at Dandelion Market and the roasted garlic pesto flatbread at Soul Gastrolounge.  To be honest, I was initially opposed to the small serving sizes, but then I realized the concept gave me free rein to steal food off the plates of others. Not that I'm advocating theft, Mr. President, just gluttony.

Fine dining establishments are somewhat sparse in Charlotte. Local food bloggers Kelly of Foodie Fresh and Vanessa of Life Undeveloped rave over The Fig Tree's elk chop and escargot (a rare find in the city), which is served in a creamy gorgonzola sauce.  Personally, I've got my eyes set on their lobster hushpuppies.  Another option is Customshop, which is home to the best charcuterie in town.  Laura of Chef Laura at Home highly recommends their barbecue octopus.

I would be negligent if I did not end this culinary guide with dessert.  Charlotteans and visitors alike rave over Bistro La Bon's bourbon brioche bread pudding, Ten Park Lanes' moonshine pecan pie, and Amelie's salted caramel brownies, which have a cult following.  If you can have only one dessert during your trip to Charlotte, you must go with a Carolina classic:  the banana pudding with Nilla wafers from Mert's Heart and Soul

Well Mr. President, I hope this letter leaves you feeling well-versed in Charlotte's culinary pleasures and ready to embrace this city with an open mouth and a pocket full of Tums.

For your reference, here's a link to the Urbanspoon guide I created for the DNC. I'm Mary Cowx, and I approve this message.

Best Bites: A Real Ice Cream Sandwich at Tang?s Donuts in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has more doughnut shops than any city really needs. It has so many, in fact, that there are doughnut shop sub-genres, like the famous Chinese food-doughnut shop combos. The funny thing about LA doughnut shops, however, is that some of their best treats aren’t even doughnuts. Such as the amazing concoction at Tang’s [...]

Watch Our Collection of 13 Great Chicago Food Movies

Here's a time-killer before a three-day weekend if we've ever posted one. It's a collection of 13 videos which capture the essence of the Chicago food scene over the years on film, from feature films to documentaries to TV commercials, from the very highest of the high end (yes, there's Alinea in there) to delis, barbecue and hot dog joints. Check them out in our slideshow— each one links to a YouTube clip or something similar— and if you can think of great ones we've left out, especially from unsung amateur videomakers, put the link in the comments... because like anything from the movies, we're leaving it open for a sequel.

Football fantasyland

So fantasy football's around the corner, and you're in the dark about something. Maybe you don't know which players to avoid drafting. Or what you should be drinking. Or when you should be Shiva blasting (see sidebar).

Not to worry. The stars of FX's "The League," which is set in Chicago and returns this fall, are happy to help. Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton-who are married in real life-took time out from filming the show's fourth season to dispense advice on how to rule fantasy football season.

Check out the advice they shared exclusively with RedEye via email, and good luck. You're gonna need it.

Do you play fantasy football? If so, how many leagues are you in, and how many times have you won a title?

Mark Duplass: I'm only in one league, with the cast and creators of the show "The League." In real life, I have never won one. But I placed second to [co-star] Nick Kroll last year. Then I kicked him in the balls.

Katie Aselton: I do. [Co-creators] Jackie [Schaffer], Jeff Schaffer and the cast play in a league and I won the first season. Since then, I haven't really tried all that hard.

How do you keep your spouse happy during fantasy football season?

MD: Brainwash your spouse into joining your league.

KA: [My husband and I] are in a league together, so whoever is winning is happy.

What's the best location for a fantasy football draft?

MD: I know everyone always says this, but you can't really beat Greenland. I mean Vegas.

What's the key to convincing someone to trade with you?

MD: Make it seem like you are depressed and that you really "need something decent to happen in your life right now."

KA: Distraction.

What should every fantasy football draft include?

MD: A computer. And an intermittently working Internet connection so someone gets royally [bleeped] by autodraft.

KA: One idiot who chooses poorly.

What's the perfect way to celebrate a fantasy football championship?

MD: By realizing it doesn't really make you happy and you've wasted an inordinate amount of time and energy on a really ridiculous game.

KA: Rub it in everyone's faces for the next year.

What's the best drink for draft day?

KA: Sam Adams Light.

What's the worst place to drink 3 Penis Wine?

KA: Church.

Where's the best place to Shiva blast?

MD: Public bathroom. In the stall.

KA: The shower.

What's the worst fantasy pick you've ever made?

MD: Reggie Bush. Every year.

KA: I might have drafted someone with a broken neck last year. I will neither confirm nor deny ...

Would you rather be a punter or a kicker? Why?

KA: Either. Fantastic legs on both.

Is it wrong to draft players without researching and instead pick your favorite players?

MD: Depends on who your favirte players are. If they are Arian Foster and LeSean McCoy, you're golden!

KA: Not always. Tom Brady is both a fabulous pick AND dashingly handsome. He's a win-win.

Are there any players you would never draft, on principle?

MD: Michael Vick. Not because of the dogs, [but] because he gets hurt a lot.

KA: Nope. Having principles in fantasy is ridiculous.

Why should or shouldn't you take fantasy football advice from a TV comedy?

KA: You should because we know our [bleep]. Kinda.

'Shiva blasting' and '3 Penis Wine' explained

OK, so some of the subjects in Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton's words of fantasy football wisdom may have seemed strange. This primer on the vernacular of "The League" should clear things up.

Shiva blasting

The show's championship trophy is named after Shivakamini Somakandarkram, a high school classmate of one of the characters. According to urbandictionary.com, Shiva blasting "is the calling of Shivakamini's full name after being around her or her memorabilia for an extended period of time."

3 Penis Wine

Believe it or not (and you would if you watched the show), Taco MacArthur (Jon Lajoie) wants to become the leading distributor of this beverage. Watch the infomercial on YouTube to see something hilarious. Just turn the sound down-WAY down-if you're at work.

The Incredible Growing Eataly Still Coming to Chicago... Somewhere

Sunday afternoon at Eataly NY.

Eataly New York just blew through its revenue projections, according to the New York Times, producing revenue per square foot far in excess of conventional food concepts such as Cheesecake Factory. So it is perhaps not surprising that as its purse grows, so does its ambition for Chicago. A few months back we reported that Eataly was close to signing on the ESPN Zone space, which would have offered about 2/3 the 50,000 square feet of Eataly New York. That might have seemed a wise conservative approach to take then, but the Times says that they're now looking at spaces even bigger than New York's, on the order of 60,000 to 70,000 square feet, and offering a broader variety of restaurants than the New York Eataly (which has seven distinct restaurants or eating stands, as well as a vast shopping area). So where is this open space "in the retail heart of Chicago" which will accommodate a SuperMechaEataly? There can't be that many candidates, but we look forward to finding out soon, because we've been dreaming of that braised escarole ever since. [NYT]
