Go to The Bedford Tonight. Meet the Market.

The Bedford's vault.

The Green City Market Junior Board is a group of chefs, media people, PR folks, and other people interested in helping the market serve its mission in better and more creative ways. One of the newest members is chef Mark Steuer of The Bedford, and he and his place will be hosts tonight for the return of the Junior Board's Meet the Market series of events this spring— and you're invited. The farmer guest of honor will be Peter Klein of Seedling, and you'll see fruit from him and others at the market in Steuer's passed apps and in the $8 cocktails using FEW spirits ($6 goes to the market as a donation). The event itself, from 6 to 8 p.m., is free, and if that wasn't cool enough, it's in the very cool bank space at The Bedford. Find out more about it here.

Urbanspoon Travel Guide: Brisbane

Our Travel Guide leaves North America for the first time with a trip to Brisbane.

Urbanspoon's top-ranked Brisbane blog is Hungry Kittens, written by Cora Chen. With nearly 200 Brisbane blog posts to her credit, we figured she'd have some good advice, especially for those visiting the central business district.

Steak at Cha Cha CharWhen in the CBD, Cora suggests the Eagle Street Pier for fine dining. Her picks include the wagyu steak at Cha Cha Char, which she describes as "still the best steaks I've ever had." As she wrote in her blog post: "The steak was cooked perfectly but the taste was beyond perfection. It had this amazing caramel crust that I haven't tasted in a steak for a long, long time. As horrible as it is to say this, the fatty bits were the best... so delicious."

Other Eagle Street Pier picks include Aria Brisbane for Modern Australian ("…excellent quality and unlike the really snooty places, serving sizes are very reasonable.") and Sake for contemporary Japanese ("…a perfect whole experience.").

Taste GalleryFor those folks straying from the CBD, Cora adds, "I love Asian eateries with huge selections in their menus, great flavors and speedy service. For that, you can't go past Market Square in Sunnybank." Cora has eaten at every shop there, and suggests Malaya Corner, currently Urbanspoon's #2-ranked Sunnybank spot, for flavorsome Indochinese dishes (she especially recommends the oat-battered prawns), and Taste Gallery for their dumplings.

"Vanilla" is one of our top Brisbane contributors, approaching 100 reviews for the area. She suggested a few choices near her home in the Brisbane Core. She likes the French food at Anise ("…perfect for a Sunday night meal with perfectly matched wines by Guy") as well as The Smoke BBQ and Beccofino's Italian selections.

Bistro CFor those with the time and transportation, Vanilla suggests driving a few hours up the Sunshine Coast to the popular tourist spot Noosa, where diners can check out Bistro C Beachside Restaurant & Bar, currently our top-ranked Noosa listing ("…the locals are strong supporters – always a good sign") as well as Wasabi, which Vanilla calls "a must."

Finally, when we asked for some suggestions on Facebook, one of our French followers wrote: "If you ever find yourself in Brisbane. Forego the usual haunts and try Citron in Wilston. A true gem, modern Asian with real guts. An inventive chef, great staff and memorable food."

Upcoming Brisbane-Area Events

Caxton Street Seafood & Wine Festival: May 6, 2012

This 18th edition of "Queensland's biggest street party" will feature a vast array of seafood selections from more than 20 local restaurants, plus plenty of offerings from local wineries.

Noosa Food and Wine Festival: May 17-20, 2012

Bleeding Heart Bakery Opens Belmont Location, Fires Shots at Partners

At first we wondered if it was just an unfortunate choice of words, the way Vinny and Michelle Garcia's Bleeding Heart Bakery newsletter described the opening of their latest location on Belmont:

With the opening of the Belmont store, we are returning to our roots [emphasis added] by letting the food and seasons speak to us.

Roots Handmade Pizza is of course the name of the pizza place owned by their apparently estranged partners, Greg Mohr and Scott Weiner, who operate the West Town Bleeding Heart Bakery which was, for a brief time, meant to be the central bakery for the whole chain. But then subtlety is thrown to the wind:

We are the sole location to truly get a Bleeding Heart cake, made the way we make everything, local, organic and delicious. Don't be fooled by impostors...know your food, know your baker!

"Impostors" is the way you refer to your "partners" if you want your next phone call to be to your "lawyers," we suspect. In any case, it certainly appears that the break between the would-be systematized and corporatized West Town location and the Garcias is not only irrevocable but likely to get messier before it's over.

The pinball wizards

Somebody is about to flip out!

Two brothers from the Chicago area rank among the top 10 world's best pinball players, and they will compete at the International Flipper Pinball Association's World Pinball Championships next month.

Zach Sharpe, 30, (6th place) and his older brother Josh, 32, (10thplace) will shoot the silver ball among a field of 64 players from all over the world June 8-10 at former NBA pro Todd MacCulloch's home in Washington state.

They'll battle for bragging rights when they play pinball machines of all eras from the '70s to now. First place pays out $1,000 and a new pinball machine valued at $5,000. The top 16 players will win cash prizes.

It's a game that runs in the family. Their dad, Roger Sharpe, designed games, and the brothers, who run the association, grew up around pinball machines.

"Instead of turning on a vacuum to quiet crying babies, he would turn on the lights. The light shows, bells and whistles would keep us captivated," said Zach, an ad company account manager who lives in Albany Park.

Josh, father of a newborn baby, adds, "It still works by the way."

In the basement of Josh's home in Palatine, there are 18 pinball machines lining the walls. Three of those - Sharpshooter made in 1978, Barracora made in 1981 and Cyclopes made in 1984 - are his dad's work. Two of the machines even feature the likeness of his mom and dad in the games' characters. Zach has five pinball machines in his condo, but that doesn't rival his father's collection of 30.

"It was always something we would do together. Our dad is sort of like a big kid in a way and we'd play a lot of video games with him when we were kids and a lot of pinball and it was always just fun," said Josh, a controller at Raw Thrills, an arcade game company.

"There was no pressure to perform, no 'Toddlers & Tiaras' type of action going on that we do see from younger competitors these days where it's more about the parents than the kids," he said.

In fact, they say their father didn't let them compete in tournaments when they were younger because he was worried they'd take it too seriously. They begged to compete and finally did and have a friendly sibling rivalry going only when they play each other. Otherwise, they say, they root for one another.

The game of pinball requires a combination of skill and luck. "It's really hard and chaotic and things are going everywhere but the moments where you're fully in control of what's going on, it's awesome," Josh said.

For Zach, "It's that constant pressure in trying to execute which makes it fun."

Video or computer games can't replicate the experience of playing pinball, they said.

"It's never the same game twice because the ball can go anywhere and do anything," Josh said. "With pinball, it's sort of its own universe under glass with its own rules."

Urbanspoon Travel Guide: St. Louis

St. Louis cakeFor the Urbanspoon Travel Guide's first Midwest stop, we asked two of our top St. Louis contributors for their personal picks.

First, we checked in with Scrunchee, an Urbanspoon Prime member who has voted on more than 300 St. Louis area restaurants, and whose motto is "A tavola non si invecchia!" (At the table with good friends and family you do not become old!)

Square One Brewery & DistilleryScrunchee recommended checking out the Soulard & Benton Park area, featuring some of the city's "newest/hippest places to eat in cool brick rehabbed buildings." In the area, Scrunchee suggests Square One Brewery & Distillery. "They have a great location, amazing food, and warm ambience. Weather permitting you can sit on the patio for hours and enjoy food, drinks, and a friendly staff."

Blues City DeliWhen we asked for a spot in a less-traveled place, Scrunchee threw us a curveball by staying in the Soulard & Benton Park neighborhood, explaining that the Blues City Deli is in a "different, much less noticeable location; this is not where the foot traffic, cute shops, and Park are located. [The Blues City Deli] takes some work to find, and their hours are minimal, but it is a MUST DO. Hands down the #1 sandwich shop in St. Louis."

Finally, writing that "pizza is what is hot right now in the Lou," Scrunchee tags Dewy's Pizza in University City as one of the city's best pizza spots.

Schlafly Tap Room Beer SamplerWe also checked in with Jason Mengwasser, who has posted more than 170 photos of St. Louis restaurants. When we asked for a downtown pick, Jason took the local's love of beer into consideration and suggested the Schlafly Tap Room. "You'll be hard pressed to find better beers than you can get here," he writes, with an emphasis on "the best local brews." He also likes the less-standard pub offerings: "Start off with a nice bowl of rarebit and go from there."

Sanctuaria CocktailsContinuing the libatious theme, Jason also recommends Sanctuaria in The Grove district. Sanctuaria is a tapas spot that's currently ranked third in The Grove on Urbanspoon, but according to Jason, "what truly shines here are their cocktails. They have a unique and very extensive cocktail menu (over 150 at last count), that uses all sorts of house-made infused liqueurs."

Finally, Jason calls the Central West End "a great spot for visitors" with "a wide variety of restaurants." The current top-ranked CWE spot is The Cup, a gourmet cupcake shop which sounds like a great place to finish up a day of traveling.

Upcoming St. Louis Events

Riverfront Times Iron Fork

The Iron Fork event on March 22 will have tastings from 30 restaurants selected by the Riverfront Times' food critic, Ian Froeb. The event also features live music and cooking/mixology competitions.

Titanic Centennial Weekend

Two dining events are being held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the R. M. S. Titanic. "The Last Dinner on the Titanic" takes place April 14 at the Fabulous Fox Theater. This 11-course authentic recreation of that last dinner will be accompanied by wine, music, and stories about the passengers. Tickets are $500, and white tie and tails are suggested. The following day is the Titanic Champagne Brunch in the Piper Palm House, located in Tower Grove Park. The menu will be recreated from a first-class menu served on the voyage, and tickets are a more manageable $45.

Depending on the level of authenticity at these events, we might suggest leaving a bit early...
