We were going to write about this event called the Midnight Ramen. What it is, is, after the Chicago Food Film Festival on Saturday night, a new outfit called Kitchit Chicago (there are outposts elsewhere) that stages way cool food events would bring in a celebrated Japanese ramen chef, Keizo Shimamoto, for a latenight ramen party at Phillip Foss's EL Ideas. (Foss comes into it because one of the films in the fest is about him and he'll be serving something during one of the programs.) The problem was, it sold out instantly, and we don't really like to write about things our readers can't go to. But now you can after all, so here we are. There will be a raffle for the last 10 tickets, free; you can go here to sign up (but hurry, they're picking winners this afternoon). And we have another pair to give away— all you have to do tweet one of our trademark ridiculous hashtags, #TheresAGrubStreetInMyRamen and we'll pick a winner on Friday. But that's not all that's happening that involves EL Ideas, Kitchit Chicago, and the Chicago Food Film Festival.
Sunday night there will be an after-party VIP dinner for the Food Film Festival at EL Ideas. And for $165, you can go and hang with the Food Film Festival crew (a lively bunch, we can tell you). Or maybe this is the best part... you can finally eat dinner at EL Ideas without a three month wait. To find out more and get a ticket for this event, go here.

Food culture would not have exploded the way it has without the advent of social media. For those of us who crave foodie information as much as we crave Thomas Keller's famed oysters and pearls (they really are freaking fantastic), you really can't beat services like Twitter and Instagram.
Be that as it may, Twitter's utility is often relegated to one-off interactions or publicly available "instant messages" between a tweeter and their follower(s). Given that reality, it was super cool when Eric Ripert (@ericripert), the Michelin-starred chef of NYC's Le Bernadin, took to Twitter to educate his followers on the proper way to sharpen the most important tool any food wrangler owns. What made his use of Twitter compelling was that he tweeted a series of photos in succession. Ripert is a titan of the food industry and he is perhaps the foremost fish filleter in the world; so when he talks (or in this case tweets) about food, it's probably not a bad idea to take note.
In a mere nine steps, Ripert literally showed people how to take a kitchen knife and sharpen it using steel and a wet stone, something chefs have been doing for centuries. Not only was the series informative, but the tweets invited people to read through Ripert's feed and interact with his account in a way they may not otherwise think to try.
We've taken it upon ourselves to round up the series in one place. If you don't own a knife-sharpening stone, you can pick one up pretty inexpensively (here's a popular one from Amazon for the couch shopper).
Step 1: It begins simply enough
|
|
Step 2: Start with steel
|
Step 3: Watch your piggies
|
Step 4: Break out the stone
|
Step 5: Bath time
|
Step 6: Towel off
|
Step 7: Gently grind
|
Step 8: Almost done
|
Step 9: FIN!
|
Pretty nifty 'eh? We really like Ripert's slightly left-of-center use of Twitter, replete with pictures… because everything is better with pictures. If you know of another food-related Twitter series, be sure to send it our way!

Inspired by a post by San Francisco Weekly (Six Places to Feast on BRAAAINS in S.F.), I realized we should provide a broader guide to eating brains for the zombies who use Urbanspoon. And I'm not talking about faux offal like the "Tell-Tale Heart Burger" at Poe's Tavern which is really just ground beef, or Zombie Brains at Kasa Japanese Bar and Grill, which is merely salmon. We have some real brains to devour.
Try Miso on Meramec for some Monkey Brains over rice in Clayton, Missouri. RAW Restaurant in Ruston, Louisiana serves their Monkey Brains with crab stuffed in mushroom caps. Try Lamb Brains with jamon, broad beans, and prawns at Ortiga in Brisbane's aptly-named Fortitude Valley. Like your brains with butter? Try Fried Veal Brains at The Publican in Chicago. On a budget? Try the Brain Masala Curry at Kabob-n-Curry in Oklahoma City. And get inside the head of some of our nation's political titans at Bar Pilar in DC which serves up Calf's Brain on a seasonal basis.
And it's not all brains. . . want a side of heart to go with your brain? Try Grilled Lamb Heart at the Cask and Larder in Winter Park, Florida. Going high end? The Sweetbreads at Nine on Nine in Pittsburgh are accompanied with a nice pickled duck tongue. French zombies will feel right at home with the Duck Heart Tartare at Au Cinquième Pêché in Montreal. For a wide selection of body parts in one convenient location, try the tacos at Las Vegas' Tacos El Gordo, which can be served with beef head, tongue, or brain.
What we are trying to say is. . . Happy Halloween!

Ever get one of those text messages from the guy or girl you're crushing on, and it drives you crazy trying to figure it out? Of course you have. ; ) (Sorry, couldn't resist the cryptic emoticon.)
In the interest of promoting a greater dating dialogue, RedEye asked two of our single columnists to help out each other-and the dating public at large. Jen Kim and Anthony Roberts swapped 10 text messages they've received from the opposite sex and volunteered to translate the subtext of the other person's texts on behalf of his or her gender.
Will this exercise advance romantic relations by decades? Probably. But you can read and decide for yourself.
MESSAGES JEN HAS RECEIVED FROM MEN
Hi ;)
Anthony's translation: The textual equivalent to a kiss on the cheek. Hoping for a tongue kiss later, though.
Hey. It was great seeing you last night.
Anthony's translation: I forgot that I had your number, and you looked better than I remembered. Guess who's back on my radar!
Sure.
Anthony's translation: I mean ... I'm not opposed to it.
Um. Sure.
Anthony's translation: Damn. Why can't I think of excuses quicker?
What are you up to? ;)
Anthony's translation: Don't really have anything to say, but hey, this'll get the convo started.
Good Morning
Anthony's translation: It's early, so start thinking of me now! Hey, I'm "making an effort."
Ur cute.
Anthony's translation: Testing the waters here. If I get "so are you," I'm in there. If I get "thanks," I'm in the dreaded friend zone.
i'll call you later.
Anthony's translation: Out with someone more important than you right now.
How was your day?
Anthony's translation: Look! I'm not selfish, just after sex or self-absorbed.
My buddies and I are going to this bar later. You should come.
Anthony's translation: I don't want to necessarily date you, but I do want you and booze to be in the same equation.
Anthony's final word
Sometimes deciphering texts from the opposite sex can be like watching old people fist fight: You're not quite sure what to make of it. When in doubt, do what people did in the '90s. Just call.
MESSAGES ANTHONY HAS RECEIVED FROM WOMEN
We should hook up my bff with someone. You think she's cute, right?
Jen's translation: My bff has a crush on your buddy Mike and is dying for you to set something up.
I'm hungry ...
Jen's translation: Can we go to that new fancy restaurant tonight?
Sure, love to go to the movies. Can my friend come with us?
Jen's translation: Don't want to be alone with you. You creep me out. Big time.
Hey! Just checking in. Hadn't heard from you in a while.
Jen's translation: Call me. Please!
My ex just hit me up. Drama!
Jen's translation: I'm trying to make you jealous. Is it working?
Don't have a boyfriend, but you've kinda caught me at a bad time.
Jen's translation: You creep me out. Big time.
What do you think your ex gf's would say about you?
Jen's translation: I'm debating whether we should hook up, and I'm trying to get dirt on your past relationships to help me make that decision.
How often do I run across your mind?
Jen's translation: Do you love me? Because I kind of love you. Oops. Is that too soon?
My friend just said I could invite someone to her wedding. Wanna come?
Jen's translation: I really need to make someone jealous at this wedding, and you're my last-minute pick.
I hate it when people judge you on your past.
Jen's translation: I've done some shady things. I'm just testing out whether I should admit to any of it.
Jen's final word
Romance is a lot like driving. Don't text while you're doing it because you'll inevitably get into trouble. However, if all you're looking to do is hook up, texting is your most effective wingman. Just remember: Text only after 2 a.m., use acronyms, and always employ the winky face.

Homaro Cantu, as is his wont, built up the debut of his in-house-produced CookING Under Pressure in a way that suggested a big network TV debut, only for the answer to be that it would actually run— for free, to the people!— on YouTube. But we're all for things being available to everybody on the internets, especially videos about food, and what we're really for is the freedom of getting to tell your own story in your own way without having to retrofit and phony it up into what makes salable network food TV. (Exhibit A of what happens when restaurants and food TV personalities get into bed too incestuously.) So watch the first episode— about the creation of the Nightmare Before Christmas menu at iNG— below, without any network TV executive who came over from Spike telling anybody how they need to change it to attract more 18-34s or any of that babble.

Our cousins to the north have slightly different tastes when it comes to kid-friendly restaurants. American palates preferred dough (doughnuts and pancakes), cheese (pizza), and burgers, while Canadians leaned heavily toward breakfast, which made up nearly 25% of our list of restaurants.
As the most casual and comfortable of the three meals, it's no surprise that Canadian parents feel the most comfortable where you can grab a short stack, perfect omelet, and Caesar in the same place. Some of the best breakfast can be enjoyed in Calgary at OBE Breakfast Co., which literally has a flock of their own free-range chickens that produce eggs for the restaurant. At the time of writing this post, they had cracked nearly 290K eggs! That's a lot of Eggs Bennies.
The key to a great kid-friendly restaurant isn't just booster seats, plain noodles, and French fries. Customer service is vital. "Kids love mac and cheese, denver melt sandwich, and strawberries and cream pancakes," says Emily Jane, co-owner of Jethro's Fine Grub in Vancouver. "Portions are big enough to share…and we have a team of baby-crazy servers, who've been known to hold your baby for you so you can eat!"
The well-behaved are welcome: I spoke to Shayne Perrin who, with his wife Jodi, owns and operates the popular and cozy Blue Star Diner in Calgary. "We're a family-owned restaurant in a community of a lot of families. We don't promote ourselves as a kid-friendly restaurant. It happens by default. We're Mom and Dad too so we try to be accommodating." The diner offers a variety of tacos and burgers, which are loved by parents and the kiddies.
Our list of the most popular kid-friendly restaurants is derived from researching the most popular Canadian restaurants that have received the most coverage in the past year via blogger reviews, critic reviews, and diner votes on Urbanspoon.
See if your city's kid-friendly restaurants made our list!

London is home to some of the world's best restaurants, markets, and food stalls. With over 33,000 UK restaurants on Urbanspoon, we've created our first city-specific list for London! Our Most Popular Restaurant lists are composed of those restaurants receiving the most coverage via diner reviews, blog posts, critic reviews, and votes over a 12-month period.
Each of the dozen restaurants on our list is celebrated and loved by their respective neighborhoods and fans. A few highlights: the restaurant that popped up (literally) two years ago, Roganic, highlights local farmers and producers with their 3, 6, and 10-course dinner menus (also available vegetarian!). Roganic is the little sister restaurant to the elegant L'Enclume five hours' north of London in the village of Cartmel.
London's entertainment center, Soho, had two restaurants on our list: Quo Vadis (aka QV) and Barrafina, the place for "couture tapas". Urbanspoon user DLVdotcom says of QV, "Since Jeremy Lee rocked up the Pots and Pans QV has become a real banker in the London restaurant canon of quality. Simple, well executed, satisfying food abounds."
Until our next list, if you're looking for inspiration to plan your perfect day in London, check out Sir Terrence Conran and Peter Prescott's book Eat London 2.

We've got a few choice cracks to make about what state government in Illinois would know about a sustainable future, but setting that aside, congrats to Testa Produce for winning a Governor's Sustainability Award for their LEED-platinum certified distribution center in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. More about them from the last award they won here.
? Zia's, a popular restaurant on the far northwest side, looks to be coming to West Lakeview, to the location of Centro and Cy's Crab House (3819 N. Ashland) which has sort of been a restaurant black hole, but should work for somebody (it even has parking). According to Alderman Pawar's Facebook page, Zia's will also have a new neighbor in the form of a new location for Tango Sur on the same block. (Facebook/Eater)
? Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert will bring their act to the Auditorium Theater on May 9, and for some reason, tickets go on sale Friday at 10 am. Or maybe the folks at Budacki's can hook you up. [312 Dining Diva]

Some of us recently celebrated national taco day and pierogi day among the daily growing number of food holidays, but next week will be different. Organizations, restaurants, and chefs have joined together in an effort to celebrate and inform communities about healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) organized Food Day last year as an annual event that addresses issues of health and nutrition, hunger, agricultural policy, animal welfare, and farm worker injustice.
Over 2,300 events took place last year, and this year is already proving to be bigger with festivals, cooking demonstrations, fundraisers, and chefs collaborating to create unique programs and seasonal meals. If you're lucky enough to live near one of these restaurants, you could possibly be dining on sunchoke flatbread, stinging nettle risotto with sage ricotta, roasted potato rajas relleno, pumpkin tiramisu, or baked apples with Calvados caramel, brown sugar croutons, cashews, and sea salt-cinnamon swirl ice cream. Patrona Restaurant in California is celebrating farmers by treating them to a free meal. Those of us that aren't near a participating restaurant can celebrate by hosting a dinner party for family, friends, and neighbors. A Dinner Party Kit that includes place cards, pumpkin carving stencils, and recipes from celebrated chefs can be downloaded here.
Even though Food Day is officially on October 24, events have been taking place all month. To find an event in your area, visit their Events page.
Here are some of the upcoming events taking place in restaurants (restaurant names are linked to their Urbanspoon pages, and events are linked to their event info page on the Food Day site):
