Toxin-free cleaning for your Dallas apartment

All those spray bottles and containers that hold the household cleaners are also made of heavy plastics. Here are some tips for making some homemade cleaners with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. Baking soda: Baking soda is a mild abrasive and deodorizer. You can use it to scrub away tub lines or hardened surface stains. Make a paste of it with water or pour some vinegar or citrus juice on it to bubble and leave it to soak for tougher stains. You can even scrub that tub with baking soda and half a lemon or orange for a citrusy cent. White Vinegar: White vinegar?s mildly acidic properties do a good job of breaking up gunk. For lighter cleaning mix vinegar and water one to one. For heavier areas (like soap scum or hard water stains) use straight vinegar. For an ammonia-free glass cleaner, add a splash of vinegar to a mixture of one to one water and rubbing alcohol. Olive oil: This homemade furniture polish is good enough to eat (literally)! One part lemon juice to two parts olive oil makes a perfect wood polish for both cleaning (as the lemon breaks up grit) and shine. Apply with a dry cloth and then wipe it up with the dry side of the cloth. This also doubles as salad dressing. Citrus: Citrus is an excellent natural cleaning ingredient that also smells great. To cure a stinky kitchen sink, sprinkle some baking soda in the drain and squirt citrus juice in there. When it stops bubbling, give it a rinse and run the disposal. For a dirty microwave with stuck on splatters, take a bowl of either plain water or water and vinegar, add a few slices of the citrus of your choice, and microwave it until the steam has loosened all that stuck-on grime (start at five minutes on high and go from there). The food particles will wipe right off with no elbow grease.
