The Gold Standard of eating your way through LA

Over 2,000 people converged on LA Weekly?s Gold Standard on Sunday. Curated by local food writer and Pulitzer Prize winner Jonathan Gold, it?s a collection of about 50 of his favorite restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries. In a way, it was a bit of a going-away party for the J Gold. Most, if not all, are hoping he takes this annual foodie event with him to his new gig at the LA Times. Gold all but confirmed he would continue the event in some form or another.

For the fourth annual event, pork ruled. From pt to belly and pulled pork shoulder, nobody was complaining. We immediately hit up Salt?s Cure serving up a delicious pt on toast with pickled onion. Tasting Kitchen, an Abbot Kinney favorite, met the pork challenge by offering up perfectly salted pork rillettes. Even the Thai Town darling Jitlada was serving up her classic spicy curried pork belly dish. Michael Voltaggio from ink, always an excellent showman, served up thinly-sliced beef tongue with crispy tendon chicharrn served in a bibb lettuce cup, topped with horseradish that was turned into a cold powder with the help of smoking liquid nitrogen.

On a day with record temps, it was evident: these are indeed some of the hottest restaurants in LA. Hordes of foodies, bloggers, and even other chefs made their way around from booth to booth, sampling delectable dishes. Crowds were lining up at Ricardo Zarate?s Picca for more pork, of course, a classic carapulcra ? a sun-dried potato stew with roasted pork belly. Even Josef Centeno?s pork bco from Bco Mercat was picked clean by about three o?clock.

People lined up twenty deep for Animal?s foie gras mousse spread on buttered toast. Other favs from the day were the fried oysters from Hungry Cat, moist pastrami from Smoke City Market, crispy pork belly porchetta from Sotto, delicious pig tail from Spice Table, mole tamales from Guelaguetza, assorted tacos from Loteria, and suckling pig tostaditos from CaCao. Stuffed yet?

Sweets also shone this year. As a reprieve from the heat, people were converging on Bulgarini Gelato. Along with homemade pop-tarts and bacon donut holes from Nickel Diner were delicious desserts from HuckleBerry and the new-ish Short Cake, plus the best dessert in all of Los Angeles, the Butterscotch Budino from Mozza.

Coffee roasters LAMILL, Zona Rosa, and Handsome Coffee kept people pleasantly caffeinated. Cold beer served by Stella Artois and Singha kept people cool and a fine selection of wine from the Winehouse made pairing plates of food with wine a breeze.
