In 1979, decades before Urbanspoon users posted their first reviews or "Like It" votes, Tim and Nina Zagat surveyed some friends about their New York City dining experiences. The result was the first Zagat Survey, a mimeographed sheet of legal paper copied and passed around by the thousands. As the couple later wrote, Zagat "began to break the uninformative oligopoly of a few powerful restaurant critics." Acquired today by Google, Zagat now covers restaurants in over 100 countries.
The democratization of restaurant reviewing is obviously of great importance to us here at Urbanspoon, which is why we?re so excited about our new content partnership with Zagat. Over 25,000 Urbanspoon restaurant listings now feature excerpts from and links to zagat.com, allowing our users to enjoy and use the opinionated and entertaining opinions of hundreds of thousands of Zagat reviewers worldwide.
Along with our own user reviews, thousands of foodie blogs, and professional critic reviews, the Zagat surveys help give Urbanspoon the widest variety of dining information and opinions available anywhere.
It's all part of Urbanspoon's mission to help people find great places to eat, something Zagat has been doing for more than 30 years.
