How Late is Too Late to Wait for Valentine's Reservations?

Forget about snagging that last-minute reservation for Valentine's Day. It's time to plan ahead! To help you avoid taking your date to a romantic Subway dinner, we looked back at patterns on Urbanspoon for the six weeks leading up to February 14th.

Starting two weeks prior to Valentine's Day, we see an increase of over 20% in traffic, rising to 33% for the week prior to the big night. Turns out we tend to remember Valentine's Day on traditional date nights, Friday and Saturday, which show an almost 50% increase in traffic immediately before Valentine's Day. (Interestingly the counterpoint is true as well - there's almost no increase in traffic on the Sunday before the holiday.) This year, Valentine's Day falls on a Tuesday, so here's your best plan to secure a reservation to impress.

For the best availability, you'll want to book a full three weekends prior to February 14th ? that means prime reservation times will be snapped up this Friday and Saturday (the 27th and 28th), with most other tables getting booked the following week. So to get a jump on things, your best bet for getting that hard-to-score table is to book today, Thursday the 26th. The following Friday and Saturday (the 3rd and 4th of February) will see almost everything filling up. Last-minute procrastinators can snap up the remaining tables on Sunday, the 5th of February. Wait until the Friday before V-Day (February 9th), and you'll find yourself eating at Subway with Michael Phelps.

Take heed: you can get roses or chocolate delivered almost overnight, but the race for fine dining on Valentine's Day starts now!
