Alinea Opens Ticket Sales! Alinea Tickets Gone Already!
To get tickets, you must choose the right spoon. But there is no spoon.
The first month of the new ticketing system at Alinea went on sale yesterday afternoon. And while it may not have produced quite the crush that Next has, it wasn't exactly an unfamiliar experience, either— tickets went within a few hours, and by about 6 p.m. last night were down to a few six tops which were released after being on hold with purchasers who didn't complete their transaction. The Facebook page promises that the remainder of the year might be a little more orderly process than the present mad-scramble-for-any-date-you-can-get, or the frequent meltdowns that were part of the system's early days at Next:
Lots of questions regarding Sept - December. We will announce a date / time for those to go on sale via here and Twitter with plenty of notice. Now that the system is running we are all set up... no issue in giving notice.
Meanwhile, if you can't dine there in August, you can at least look at some new food photos they just put up, and see what you won't be eating.

Urbanspoon Travel Guide: Montreal
This week we?ll be taking a look at Montreal with the help of a couple of our top local bloggers. First, we checked in with Jennifer of Braised and Confused, our top-ranked Montreal blog. She?s reviewed more than 75 local restaurants, so she was definitely one of the first people we thought of for advice on great Montreal spots.
"Unfortunately, the downtown core doesn't have too many great restaurants, being populated with more food-court-type foods. But, there is one place in the Golden Square Mile that is particularly worth going to. It is called Dominion Square Tavern [Taverne Square Dominion]. It is the sister restaurant to the Baldwin Barmacie (great bar on Laurier) and has a similar vintage-cool, rustic chic sort of decor and ambiance. They have great lunch specials and a formidable list of cocktails that are all (and I mean all) delicious."
For a restaurant in a less-traveled spot, I would check out Little Burgundy, part of Le Sud-Ouest. I'm sure you've heard of Joe Beef, now legendary in Montreal as well as internationally. Little Burgundy is a little more out of the way and only recently has traffic been increasing almost single-handedly by the popularity of the aforementioned restaurant along with Liverpool House (owned by the same people as Joe Beef), Burgundy Lion, Jane's, and the new Nora Grey among a host of other trendy restaurants. Definitely a cool area to spend some time in."
One of our favorite blogging couples is the pair behind Foodie Date Night. They offered their top picks for diners:
- L?Express in Plateau Mont-Royal, "a true little taste of Paris in Montreal."
- Brasserie T! in the Latin Quarter where "the service was excellent, the food was classic, unpretentious and all executed professionally and the prices represented very good value."
- Les 400 Coups in Old Montreal: "?without question uncompromising in flavor and originality and came at an unbeatable value."
- Osteria Venti, also in Old Montreal, is "?authentic, regional Italian done with the care and attention it deserves; everything is made in house, the bread, the pasta, everything."
We also asked the Foodie Date Night team for a romantic spot to enjoy dinner. They suggested Restaurant MAS Cuisine, "one of our favorite romantic restaurants a little off the beaten path." Their review calls Restaurant MAS Cuisine "truly a diamond in the rough," with the food "flawless, not a single component of any dish was unfit or out of place? at a value that is really something to talk about."
Upcoming Montreal Events
Montral en Lumire
A bright light in the dark depths of winter, the huge, citywide festival Montral en Lumire (formerly the Montreal High Lights Festival) will take place February 16-26, 2012. The festival features a huge assortment of gastronomical events, with guided tours focusing on local cuisine, a special weekend of demonstrations and samplings at the Jean Talon Market, and everything from $12.95 lunch deals at top restaurants to $300 dinners prepared by some of the dozens of celebrated chefs and winemakers visiting from around the world.
From January 6 through March 31, Parc Jean-Drapeau will be home to the Snow Village, featuring an ice hotel, a snow maze, and an ice-carved replica of the city. And when you?re ready for dinner, you can stop by Le Mont Blanc, the Ice Restaurant. The 60-seat restaurant will be housed in a giant igloo, with interior decorations made from ice and snow (except for the fur covering the seats). Le Mont Blanc will offer a Nordic gourmet menu with a focus on local produce. If you?re just looking for a drink, the Snow Village will have also an Ice Bar, of course.

Robbie Fulks and The Last Anthony Bourdain in Chicago Story You Need To Read
The Hideout
In our coverage of The Great Bourdain-Budacki's Fight of '12, we noted the fact that Budacki's promotion of the shooting (which earned Bourdain's wrath) was not that different from the show itself typically packing the house, as they had done with people we mostly know at Burt's Pizza a few years ago. This earned a condescending denial from Tony himself: "@GrubStreetCHI small factual matter: we did not pack Burt's with extras. When you assume you...". But now comes a wry firsthand account of how the show ensures a good crowd in the background— without promoting Bourdain's name and attracting foodie groupies alone. It's from alt-country great Robbie Fulks at his blog, and it starts with a call asking him to help make sure there's a big crowd at the Hideout on a Monday night— but he can't even tell his fellow band members why.
As Fulks tells the story:
The famed chef Anthony Bordeaux was coming to next Monday night's show, to tape a little of the performance for his TV show, hang out at the bar, and talk to me and other denizens of the Hideout. A little probing revealed that the worthy was in fact Anthony Bourdain, but I really like "Bordeaux" better in every way: "Hey there, Bordeaux, welcome to fuckin' Chicago!" Anyway, I was given a delicate mission, to promote the show, hard, in order to fill the room -- but the reason was to be kept strictly secret. Even the band must not know. If Anothony Bordeaux walked into a place and a flock of Anthony Bordeaux fans were waiting there to hound and to gurm him, the flavor of the show would be spoilt.
Fulks and his band get a bunch of their friends out, pack the bar, push back the starting time of their set to accommodate the fact that Bourdain and crew will be late... but in the end they're so late that the show ends and the crowd leaves before Bourdain ever gets there:
So anyone that came for some TV excitement and hung around for an hour afterward (there were a good number) got to see what the front room of the Hideout looks like with some musicians at one end of the bar, Anthony Bordeaux at the other end, and a small phalanx of cameramen and producers scurrying around in between us and behind the counter... But I think it's too bad they missed the show. As one observer generously noted, the tableau of traveling to a town, walking into a tiny bar, and seeing the kind of music being made last night would have been pretty awesome and out-of-the-ordinary.
Don't miss some killer deadpan snark in the comments, either. [robbiefulks.com]

Urbanspoon Travel Guide: St. Louis
For the Urbanspoon Travel Guide's first Midwest stop, we asked two of our top St. Louis contributors for their personal picks.
First, we checked in with Scrunchee, an Urbanspoon Prime member who has voted on more than 300 St. Louis area restaurants, and whose motto is "A tavola non si invecchia!" (At the table with good friends and family you do not become old!)
Scrunchee recommended checking out the Soulard & Benton Park area, featuring some of the city's "newest/hippest places to eat in cool brick rehabbed buildings." In the area, Scrunchee suggests Square One Brewery & Distillery. "They have a great location, amazing food, and warm ambience. Weather permitting you can sit on the patio for hours and enjoy food, drinks, and a friendly staff."
When we asked for a spot in a less-traveled place, Scrunchee threw us a curveball by staying in the Soulard & Benton Park neighborhood, explaining that the Blues City Deli is in a "different, much less noticeable location; this is not where the foot traffic, cute shops, and Park are located. [The Blues City Deli] takes some work to find, and their hours are minimal, but it is a MUST DO. Hands down the #1 sandwich shop in St. Louis."
Finally, writing that "pizza is what is hot right now in the Lou," Scrunchee tags Dewy's Pizza in University City as one of the city's best pizza spots.
We also checked in with Jason Mengwasser, who has posted more than 170 photos of St. Louis restaurants. When we asked for a downtown pick, Jason took the local's love of beer into consideration and suggested the Schlafly Tap Room. "You'll be hard pressed to find better beers than you can get here," he writes, with an emphasis on "the best local brews." He also likes the less-standard pub offerings: "Start off with a nice bowl of rarebit and go from there."
Continuing the libatious theme, Jason also recommends Sanctuaria in The Grove district. Sanctuaria is a tapas spot that's currently ranked third in The Grove on Urbanspoon, but according to Jason, "what truly shines here are their cocktails. They have a unique and very extensive cocktail menu (over 150 at last count), that uses all sorts of house-made infused liqueurs."
Finally, Jason calls the Central West End "a great spot for visitors" with "a wide variety of restaurants." The current top-ranked CWE spot is The Cup, a gourmet cupcake shop which sounds like a great place to finish up a day of traveling.
Upcoming St. Louis Events
The Iron Fork event on March 22 will have tastings from 30 restaurants selected by the Riverfront Times' food critic, Ian Froeb. The event also features live music and cooking/mixology competitions.
Two dining events are being held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the R. M. S. Titanic. "The Last Dinner on the Titanic" takes place April 14 at the Fabulous Fox Theater. This 11-course authentic recreation of that last dinner will be accompanied by wine, music, and stories about the passengers. Tickets are $500, and white tie and tails are suggested. The following day is the Titanic Champagne Brunch in the Piper Palm House, located in Tower Grove Park. The menu will be recreated from a first-class menu served on the voyage, and tickets are a more manageable $45.
Depending on the level of authenticity at these events, we might suggest leaving a bit early...

Alderman Moreno Wants To Block Chick Fil-A From Logan Square. Is That Progress?
Alderman Joe Moreno.
It's been a bad couple of days for Chick Fil-A with colorful characters controlled by someone else— first they lost the support of The Muppets, now Chicago aldermen may turn on them. Alderman Proco "Joe" Moreno, whose ward includes Logan Square, says he will try to block the arrival of Chick Fil-A's second store in his ward because of the anti-gay-marriage sentiments and political activities of the company's religious owners, as expressed by company president Dan Cathy in an interview last week. Moreno's opposition immediately drew support from Mayor Emanuel, who said "Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values." So it seems likely that with all good progressive-thinking people in favor of blocking Chick Fil-A from opening in Logan Square, it's a win-win for all, right? Allow us to throw out a couple of dissenting perspectives before we all celebrate.
The first irony here is that just a week ago, many of the same people were surely following the food truck ordinance hearings and urging city government to allow fair and open competition between food trucks and brick and mortar businesses, so that consumers could decide for themselves. Now they want government to get all in the face of a business and decide who can and who can't open based on the politics of the people who own it. Is that really a criterion we want city government to apply to business licenses? If so, it ought to be applied fairly to all. Which would surely mean that Moreno should send city inspectors out to query the heavily Latino part of his ward, where we're guessing that support for gay marriage is considerably lower than it is in the hipster part, and start shutting down taquerias and florists and body shops that don't give the politically correct answer.
In fact, if anybody ought to be reluctant to give the city power to discriminate in the name of anti-discrimination, it's gays. Urban machines have always used this kind of power to harass and ghettoize openly gay businesses, which remain confined to a few neighborhoods in the city even though one assumes that there are plenty of gays who shop and work in the Magnificent Mile, say. And not to imply anything about Alderman Moreno specifically, but everyone should be hesitant about the kind of "aldermanic privilege" over a business's existence or not that has, traditionally in Chicago, been resolved with the passage of a paper bag full of twenties under a table at II Jack's, or more genteely, with the purchase of insurance from a well-connected insurance agency. (Insert Chick Fil-A/wet-my-beak joke here.)
In the end, we'd rather Chick Fil-A, or any business, face open competition in a free market than have to curry favor with the nomenklatura. In Chick Fil-A's case, that competition would be quite literal and direct: Leghorn, the chicken sandwich business that Jared Van Camp's Element Collective plans to open in Logan Square, offering an avowedly pro-gay corporate stance as well as more humanely-raised chicken. We look forward to being able to vote with our wallets for a better product with better values behind it, rather than having the choice decided for us by any city official.

Urbanspoon Travel Guide: Toronto
Our around-the-world journey continues with a stop in Toronto, one of the most active cities on Urbanspoon. The city of Toronto is the cultural, entertainment, and financial capital of Canada, and is home to more than 2.7 million people. To find the best places to eat we asked three of our favorite locals for their advice.
Caroline Becker is an Urbanspoon Prime member and the writer of our top-ranked Toronto blog, Caroline's Culinary Delights, making her the perfect choice to lead off our Toronto tour.

Yours Truly |
Caroline loves Yours Truly, describing the Little Italy/Portugal Village restaurant as "perfect on so many levels, a mixture of cooking styles, cuisines and flavours;" writing that Chef Jeff Claudio "worked at Per Se and adopted Thomas Keller's imagination." Toronto Life recently named Yours Truly as their Best New Restaurant.

Keriwa Cafe |
For some local flavor, Caroline picked Keriwa Café in Roncesvalles Village "to represent Canadian cuisine." The Roncesvalles Village is "First Nations cuisine at its finest, very imaginative and really the only one in Toronto like it." Finally, on "busy, touristy" Bloor Street, Caroline recommends the "cheap, delicious and family-run" Tacos El Asador.
Lovequalityeats joined Urbanspoon in 2009, and has since posted nearly 100 Toronto restaurant reviews. His top pick in the busy Yorkville area is Korean Grill House. For those venturing off the beaten path, LQE likes Lahore Tikka House, currently our #1-ranked spot in the Gerrard India Bazaar region, North America's largest marketplace of South Asian shops and restaurants.

Bannock |
Finally, we checked in with Urbanspoon Prime member Spezbaby. While Spezbaby doesn't have the most user reviews on Urbanspoon, he definitely has the most user reviews in haiku form. Spezbaby stuck with prose, though, when suggesting the Canadian-inspired, conveniently-located Bannock for those looking for a good Entertainment District meal. He also likes the "very interesting seasonal menu" at Zocalo, currently the #1-ranked restaurant in the Junction Triangle area, lauding "lots of housemade pickling, spreads, pates and charcuterie used in their 'deconstructed sandwiches'".
Upcoming Toronto Food Events:
Afrofest (July 7-8)
Events at Woodbine Park can be a bit claustrophobic, but on a busy summer weekend it's still worth checking out Toronto's annual celebration of African music and culture. Good music and good food.
Night it Up (July 13-15th)
Formerly Toronto Night Market, this is one of the best events of the entire year mainly because of the food and music lineup. From stinky tofu to grilled takoyaki, this one's not to be missed.
Hot & Spicy Food Festival (July 20-22)
Thai, Indian, Cajun, and Caribbean food are just some of what's represented at Harbourfront Centre's biggest (and spiciest) food festival of the year. Beyond sumptuous food samplings there's also a nice mix of music, dance, and other activities.
The Beer Festival (July 27-29)
Beer lovers can't get enough of this food festival, which this year has adopted the inevitable Beerlicious moniker. There are 200 beers on offer - many of them local and Canadian microbrews - and there's grilled meat and music too. Better get tickets early as this event can sell out.
Taste of the Danforth (August 10-12)
Like Caribana, we tend to either love this street festival or stay far far away. An abundance of souvlaki? Check! Insane crowds? Check! Thai food? Check! Have your pick of every option.
